Has the responsibility of not allowing the opponents to put the puck in his net. In the NHL there are strict rules of what the opposing team that is trying to make the score is allowed to do when it comes to the goalie. The goalies are fairly well protected through NHL rules.
Defense men
There are two of these players on the ice during the play per team. Their job is to try and keep the puck as far away from their goalie's net as possible. One of the defense will try and hover around the net area when the puck is in that area, to help prevent the puck from getting close to the net. The other defense man will work at getting the puck loose from the opposition and getting it to one of his forwards.
Forwards
These are guys that you often hear about making all the goals, although defense men do score as well. The three forwards will try and work in a horizontal line facing their opponents. There will be the center and the right and left wing forwards.They each have this sector of the ice to control when the puck comes into their area.
So now you have the start of who does what when on the ice. It gives you some understanding of what the responsibility of the players are, and enough information to allow you to ask some interesting questions so your partner can proudly show off his knowledge by answering you.
